That doesn't make sense because no straight person ever will say that, no matter the age.

Yet every gay person will say partner. It's extremely rare when I see one say bf/gf.

because it's less embarrassing than saying boyfriend/girlfriend when they themself are of the same gender

imo i think it's less intimate. I think about when a teacher/professor says pick a partner, you're only together for a certain period of time.
