Why does racism still exist in our Society?

Featured Replies

There's racism wherever you go, sadly. It...for some reason has continued to occur throughout the world and I honestly don't understand why.

People are still quick to judge a person on their skin colour and be prejudice against said person.

Jealousy of the black mans jaa

Edited by Vesperia

This is a retarded question, someones always gonna think they're superior to others, whether its based off of skin color or not. It's kinda in our nature i guess.

Racism doesn't equal hate, its just prejudiced based off of race. and i don't think prejudice will ever go away

Socioeconomic events

The example that would apply to most of us would be racism in the western world.

“In a ‘post-race’ country like America where nothing and no one is racist, where people are more likely to believe in UFO’s than in institutional bias, which does back flips to obfuscate the operations of white hegemonic power and therefore ensure its continuance, anyone seeking to expose white supremacy or battle it is in for some serious uphill. You will be attacked. You will be censured, usually by your own community. People will say that you are obsessed with race and that even mentioning white people in the context of white supremacy is itself racist. These days the average person doesn’t even have to be taught not to bring up white supremacy. Here in our country, as in Mordor, everybody knows not to say the dark lord’s name.” - Junot Diaz

Whites have been the primary driving force in the world for hundreds of years now. Whites are born on top, with significant advantages over other races. Simply put, it's more likely that a minority will be born into a poor uneducated area than a white.

If you're sitting on someone, you wont necessary realize what you're doing, and even if you do, isn't it more comfortable to stay sitting?. If you're being sat on, you will notice.

The bitterness caused by this mechanic, coupled with socioeconomic disadvantages causes minorities to act in a way that is considered inappropriate / uncivilized to western society at greater rates than their wealthy, educated counterparts.

Obviously, whites see a pattern and develop racist thoughts if they haven't learned them from their family and friends already. They stereotype minorities as uneducated and poor because the fact of the matter is that they are in today's world.

Pride

Whites may also inherently see themselves as superior, too. You mentioned that all races have contributed equally to the modern world. Sadly, this is not true. While many races have contributed in huge ways to the ancient world, whites have contributed most to the modern world. A huge amount of technological and philosophical advancement in the modern world can be attributed to whites, regardless of the fact that much of it was built on discoveries by other races.

What this means is that today's whites see a world where the people of africa, india, the middle east, and much of asia is poor both in their native countries and in the US and Europe.

Just as people who watch sports on TV identify with a team, whites identify with their race. They find pride in their race because of its success. This can also lead to thoughts of superiority.

Judging a book by its cover

People like to judge, like to define people by the simplest definition. Stereotyping is a very potent survival tool.

Sure you can assume that only the first lion was a maneater, and that you shouldn't avoid other lions because they might not be - but wouldn't it be easier to just assume that all lions tried to eat humans and avoid them altogether?

Sorry this information is disorganized, just getting my two cents in. I'm sure there are many more reasons, and hey, maybe some of mine are wrong.

Also for context: I'm white, but I have many friends that aren't, friends that I've had discussions with on this topic over a few beers.

Some black (if I can call them so) persons are really immature and annoying which could lead to you not liking them.

People often think it is because of the colour of their skin but I could care less.

If I don't like you it's not biased on your colour.

So why does it still excist? Maybe because we keep talking about it? Because people freak out when you say "black people"? How else do we have to call them?

Edit: be happy, black people get often better accepted than gay/lesbian/bisexual people...

I don't think racism will ever go away.

Some families raise their kids to be racist, and then the cycle repeats.

Tbh, i think racism exists because of religion differences

I think the advice question the assertion comes into play well here.

The question we should be asking ins't why is there still racism? But, what  caused it? Because, the prime difference between ethnic groups is skin pigment, and facial structure (which is a trait all groups encounter.) So, the idea of races as separate entities is wholly wrong in my mind. For sure, there are noticeable biological differences between ethnic groups, like larger lung capacity, higher chance of quality divergent thinking... etc... But other than that, we are all simply brown, white, and red foxes, that have met up, and are now trying to convince each other that they are not different at all, and yet they wholly are, adapted to their individual environments.

So to ask the question why does racism still exist, is to not ask the whole question. The problem is geographical esteem, territorial behaviors from our more archaic past.

So the question is really a moot point and leads me to question, is OP saying(yet I am just using your post as a host for these points) , why do humans as mammals, and all their attributes, still exist in our society?

For one can look at the neighborhood pitbull and notice its dominance over the fence.

Was that really so difficult?

There will always be racism, there will always be poverty, the world will never be completely fair. Every one cannot win, thats just a fact.

Race don't matter in my opinion we are all human.

I've already posted this, but a lot of people posting here are following the wrong train of thought, so I'd like to help clear things up. Racism stems from one basic instinct inherent to all humans, fear. More specifically, fear of those who are different than us. This fear is primal, and is an survival instinct adopted by nearly every species of animal.

Imagine you are a human tens of thousands of years ago, at this point there is no large civilization, and humans live mostly in tribes. People from your tribe look like you (skin colour included), while people from other tribes look different. People from other tribes do not look like you, they look like whatever their tribe looks like. We have developed an instinct to not trust people who are different than us, because this is a basic means of survival when trying to protect what you have from others.

This has been observed in babies only a few months old, who have had hardly any influence from society. Even babies exhibit behaviour of racial discrimination. There have been studies showing that babies prefer those who are more like them, while disliking those who are different from them. If you are wondering how these studies are performed, you should be able to google it.

All this does not mean we are doomed to racism forever, similar to the studies I posted before about racist babies, it has also been shown that as children get older, they become more accepting of those different than them, and are not so discriminating. We can attribute this to societal influences, so although racism is a primal human instinct, it is not impossible to eradicate.

TL;DR Humans are born racist, but we can teach them not to be

Many people are ignorats, because maybe they're been bullied by ''black people'' when they were young. But they should not be racist, because every person aren't same. I hope that the racism will stop, especially in Russia and Poland. It makes me sad when some people are racist against black people. And i see actually some black people being racist against white people. The racist has been immensely been lowered by now, rather than back in 70's. I'm happy about that.

Our psychology needed a way to give importance to what was once just matter, as is now life.

Quite beautiful really.
