Back in June 2017, I came across this article which talks about VPN leak. So what exactly is a VPN leak?

That includes info like your IP address, your location, even what internet service provider you're using. If that information is knowable, then tracking your online behavior isn't far behind. If you're lucky, all that happens is your web activity is monetized. But that's not always the case."

 

Today, I read another article which shows more about VPN leaks and the number of VPN service providers which actually leak your ip.

Something I'm not sure about if this is applicable to proxies. (I don't use them, maybe someone who uses them can do a quick check)

One big issue I have with VPN's and the various services as well is they usually keep logs of your traffic. Pretty hard pressed to find ones that don't do this any more. That being said on the flipside you have to deal with the issue you're bringing up with potential ip leaks. At least it's just an IP and not more track-able info. I'd reconmend to anyone worried about their VPN to research it more thoroughly moving forward if you're that worried about IP leaks.

Also if you're wondering if your data or username has been comprised (not just your ip) check this website

Search for your common usernames, emails, etc and see if your data has been leaked anywhere or been breached without your knowledge / consent.

BUT what's the point of a VPN when the government and whatever else can see your IP connecting to the VPN one. Does that not defeat the purpose?

Perhaps just to bypass sites which your isp blocks. Other than that I don't really see the point of using a vpn.

Just general privacy more than anything. Your ISP doesn't need to profile you based on your browsing habits or what you consume your data for. It's the difference between them being able to see all the information you send to whatever website you connect to vs them being able to see the IP they've assigned and then your VPN tunnel. Also it protects your IP address from the other side of the equation, anything public will not see your privately assigned ISP IP.

I hardly use vpns but use to use one called rawr vpn was pretty good.

As long as my isp doesn't know I'm torrenting movies I couldn't care less what they do with my info tbh. Unless it involves hacking me, in which case I care.
