R.I.P. Sassy - Mah Kitteh

Don't post unless you've read the whole thing. Posting anything negative won't go over well on me right now, so please don't <3

About eleven years ago my family and I decided to get a cat. We decided to go to pet smart and adopt a cat. We arrived and we saw this pretty white cat with black spots. It was a very friendly cat and so we decided to adopt her. But she had already been adopted, and we just decided to leave. A few days later we returned and there was a new cat that looked very similar. We asked if it was the same cat but this one was different. This cat had been ran over by a car and was just out of the hospital. She had a broken tail, and a few broken ribs. But she was a cat and she functioned. I immediately fell and love and we got her. A few weeks after we got her she was locked in a garage for a whole week. The owner of the garage had went on vacation and she was without food or water. She survived.

When we go on vacation and return, she would be so happy to see us. She would go out and kill two birds, bring one back for her, and one for herself. She would eat hers and leave us our on the steps. Our bird was always the bigger one. Sassy was a tough cat. She had never lost a fight and she was the king of the neighborhood. I had seen her chase deer off our property before. I always spent hours wither her every day, talking and petting her. She was always purring, and I'd never heard her not purr until yesterday. She was the only living thing I took care of and loved, and I know she loved me. When she snuck in the house, she would always find my room and would sit in my bed until we found her.

Yesterday, I was sitting here on OSBot in the chat and I heard her screech. I didn't think anything of it until my dad came in and said "I've got bad news.". My dad had accidentally ran over the back half of sassy. She had somehow gotten behind the tire and didn't move in time to get out of the way. I found her behind some bushes. She was sitting normally and licking herself. I thought she was fine until she tried to walk. She could only use her front two legs and she was obviously hurt. I sat there talking to her as she panted like a dog. This was the first time I had ever heard my cat not purr :c. We immediately brought her to the hospital and I talked to her on the way. I would say something and she would respond with a meow like normal. When we got there she didn't appear to be hurt she just looked around and was being her normal self.

The doctors said it would cost $1200 just to get the pain medications and check everything else out and that the chances of her walking again were very very slim. I know Sassy wouldn't like to not walk, and my dad made the decision to put her down. At the time I couldn't think straight and I agreed. Before they put her down I walked in to say goodbye. She was wrapped in a blanket and looked like so very comfy. I smiled

and pet her and said "You're a good girl, sassy". I turned around and left. She was purring.

Today I can't stop thinking about it. I feel I should have saved her. If any cat would survive this, it would have been her. I should have gotten everything done I could, and if she couldn't walk perfectly anyway, I'm sure she'd be happy to stay in my room, and I'd have been happy to keep her there. I'm not sure I made the right choice. Cats don't have anything to look forward to but this life, and I took that away from her.

I want my kitty back. :c

sorry to hear this happened, as a cat owner myself i would have saved her because i love my cat so much. she's in a better place now and atleast she doesn't have pain now. Poor girl. It'll take some time to move on but keep positive. R.I.P. sassy.

Sorry man. I have a dog that's 11 years old right now and couldn't imagine having to put her down after an accident like that, or even having her pass away from natural causes. She was my first pet and I've pretty much grown up with her by my side. I hope Sassy rests in peace. I'm sure you and your family gave her the best life possible. You might not have been in the financial position to save her life after the accident, but you truly saved her life when you adopted her and you gave her many years of love that I'm sure she appreciated.

Wow. I've had an almost similar situation happen with me. This was like 5 years ago, my family adopted a kitten, he was like 1 month old lol. We lived in an apartment on the 4th floor and we kept his litter box outside in the balcony so that it wouldn't stink up the house. He had a little space in the door filter so he can go into the house and back outside to his litterbox whenever he wanted to. And one day we decide to go out and leave him alone for the first time, he was like 2 months old by then. He was so tiny we weren't even worried about him being alone outside in the balcony and possibly falling out because the ledge was too high for him. So >.> we come back home and he's no where to be found. That little fucker somehow managed to get onto the balcony ledge and somehow lost his balance and fell. We found him alive inbetween some bushes in the building's entrance. He broke his spine (so he lost complete control of his lower body) and one of his arms. He died the next day. :( I have a cat now and she's not allowed to leave the house at all :x

I'm sorry, I know how it feels like. And honestly the only thing that helped me was that I got another cat asap >.> I know you might think that nothing will replace Sassy and that it might be too soon but I mean she's in a better place now and everything. Thinking about it alot will just make you sad really. Don't blame yourself.. you weren't there and you couldn't have known that it was going to happen. It was her time to go and no one coulda changed that. I'm sure you gave her the best years any kitty could ask for c:

Aw man I have read the whole thing and had tears in my eyes. I had a dog once when I was a kid and it had health problems so we decided to put her down. She got buried in our garden and I digged her up once because I missed her so so much.

We have a new dog now, same one and same name as the previous. I am getting also alot of love out of her too.

Maybe you can buy yourself a new cat if you're ready for it. It's worth it.

Sorry for your loss. I know how it feels.

This truly brought me to tears :'( i love cats so much, sorry to see this, i don't even wanna think about this happening to any of my animals :/

you could get a new kitteh now though :)

wow. im veryo sorry to read this, almost got a tear in my eye, i know you'll blame yourself(if had something similair happen to me) but you shouldn't. if she was a lively cat she would have been sad when you couldn't walk annymore. i think you made the right choice man

Sorry to hear about this man,

Try not to beat yourself up about it. There is NOTHING you could've done, and the  odds were always stacked against you.

You had to think about her, and putting her through all the grief and even more pain just wasn't worth it.

She's in a better place now and free from pain,

god bless <3

RIP in peace :(

I have an outdoor cat, & I don't see him often, but I'd be torn if I ever lost him.

I can't imagine how you feel. :(
