does anyone know if it's possible to change the 'background' color to black?

maybe with a tool or something?

Notepad takes its colors from the windows settings. If you want notepad to be old-school terminal style, you'll have to change the default windows text and text background colors. Unfortunately, this would make other programs look terrible, as not all of them are designed with altered clor-schemes in mind.
