I bought this computer brand new back in September and for whatever reason it's acting weird. For one it's slow as shit at times and freezes when doing some of the most simplest task(opening pictures,internet,emailing,clicking on different files etc). Secondly @Maldesto was telling me I showed up on a different IP despite being on the same computer in my apartment as usual. I no longer use sythe and changed my password on OSBot so I don't think I am being hacked.

 

I mostly just want to be prepared for finals(which take place on the computer and if it fucks up there I am screwed). I also want my shit safe too but finals are less than 4 weeks away and are making me super nervous. Also it took me like two hours of reseting my computer after freezing each time to send an email to my friend and now things are working with my computer it seems. This is really bumming me out.

Reformat your computer back to factory settings, its different on various models of laptop, if you google your laptop make you can find out how.

 

You'll lose your documents/programs though

Honestly, if you really want to get rid of any (reasonable) chance of having a virus, you should download a new installer from Microsoft on another computer, create an installation disc/usb, and then do a clean install on your computer.

 

 

Otherwise, get a good antivirus software, such as Kaspersky, Avast, AVG (all have free versions), and do a full scan (I recommend using one to do a full scan and then using Avast to do a boot-time scan). I only recommend this if a new install is completely out of the option.

-> Do system cleanup(this will remove the windows.old folder and other random shit you don't need)

That doesn't even remove the virus... all that does is move it from one place to another.

 

Once you've booted into the new install you don't want any trace of the virus on your computer, regardless of whether it's in windows.old or not.

It is possible for malware to persist across a re-format and re-install, if it is sufficiently ingenious and sophisticated, however most malware doesn't do anything quite this nasty. I've done this thousands of times and always worked for me so i don't really see how this doesn't work.
