Why do we call coins "GP"?

Featured Replies

I know its "Gold Pieces", but the in game name is and always has been "Coins". When did people start saying gp?  Ever since Ive been paying (7-8 years) I have referred to it as gp. How did it stick?

Not sure where it originated but people probably used it instead of coins because it's shorter and faster to type

that seems reasonable

thought it meant "Gold Points"

I think it may come from older games that referred to currency as gold points, I'm not sure though.

coins can be considered copper, nickel, etc.

the "coins" in game are specifically pieces of gold, which is the in-game currency

so the name "coins" is just a general name for it, since it's the only type

because we are pirates.

I think its just because one gold piece is simply a gold piece in the inventory :P Or maybe the first players of runescape played a similar game before it where the money was called gold piece? :P

It's gold pieces after I came up with it a good 12 years now

Have no idea tbh. I just went with the flow when someone told me it was called gp lol.

Interesting point
