Atheism in the USA

Featured Replies

Are Atheists discriminated against in the USA? Here in Europe, this would be unthinkable since the percentage of Atheists here is so high, but I've heard that it actually happens in the USA. Is this true?

Meh people make their own decisions and don't need to claim everywhere that they're atheist.

How is this an answer to my question?

its hard to tell really, cuz i can't decide for 1million people in America if they dislike Atheists in Europe/Atheists in America.

you would need to ask every American personally.

my best guess to find the answer you seek is to go to google and place your question there.

i hope i helped :)

I think that religion, anywhere in the world, should be a personal matter.

What I was trying to say is that if you openly declare yourself a part of a community, there will always be haters no matter what your beliefs are.

Of course, if you are a sheep or if you were raised to be one, you can follow the leading group within a community. But if you don't believe in the cause they praise, you could step aside and follow another path (in this particular case, atheism). This is just a matter of personal decisions, and like I was saying earlier, you don't need to share your f*ing decisions with the whole world...

Yeah, but nobody really cares until people of religion post about God on facebook and I tear apart their arguments. Then it becomes a problem.

Well, to be fair, it's extremely easy to win from a religious person in an argument. :p

And I agree with your opinion but I just want to know if atheists are discriminated against in the USA. tongue.png

Oh I'm sorry, I thought I was writing in the Intellectual Discussion section! :p

I think they might be discriminated in some parts of the USA, where religion is a heavy part of people's life, but certainly not everywhere (especially states where there is a lot of interaction with the rest of the world (California, Florida, New York, etc.)

I live in Southern CA and I am an atheist and there's quite a few out here but no discrimination from what I've seen. I have friends that believe in god and know I don't but religion isn't really discussed. As long as people don't go around trying to force others to follow their religion or try to prove why another person's is wrong no one really cares.

Actually, they are. This is a definite yes. I live in the bible belt. I learned not to long ago that one of the requirements for becoming the Governer in Texas was acknowledgement of a higher power or deity Da Fuq?

It is probably a good bet that a good percentage of the 50 states have similar laws. I also think that secretly, many politicians are agnostic or deistic; however, if they mentioned that, they would lose all hope in winning. I think I came across a poll a while ago that said that Atheists are the most distrusted in America; I was a little surprised that it wasn't muslims, but whatever.

Yes & No.

Some people care, some people don't, some people believe atheists are idiots.

I really don't like atheism, but I don't give atheists shit for what they don't believe.
