Why does racism still exist in our Society?

Featured Replies

nice man , nice topic.

my opinion: racism is very, very,  very much alive.

kids these days get more violent everyday, because they take it over from older generation kids. they start thinking they are the boss in an area, and start kicking other people around because they are different, by skin orso.

atleast, thats whats happening in my neightbour. i live in the netherlands btw

Racism can be a good thing when it reminds us that we are all different in a way. It only turns negative when we say we're better because of X, when in reality it's just a PoV.

There are a lot of reasons why racism still exist today. To try and fit in a comment on a forums would be impossible.

Although there are many reasons, these are the main ones (in my opinion.) The media, they report what's interesting and makes movies about it. How many movies have you've seen where the black person was doing drugs, robbing a bank, ect; compared to how many white people do that same thing in movies. It's an unbalanced ratio to say the least. Because of this, people rationalize who they are, and what they are meant to do in the world. A black person needs to play in the NBA. An Asian person needs to be a genius. A white person can't be a dancer because they don't have rhythm? I could go into further detail with so many more races, but it'd be a waste of time. Another reason is people hold on to the past. They want to remember the good times they had, as a child growing up drinking lemonade while sitting on there front porch. If they remember that, what's stopping them from remembering all the other things from their childhood, where there parents told them not to hang out with the black kid across the street. The Asian kid in his AP Geometry class. There is nothing. Kids just have to be smart enough to learn to be their own person.

Racism will always be in the world, no matter how much a person tries, there is always going to people out of the 7 billion others.

What bothers me most about racism is that it's all circumstantial. If Dave Chappelle is on stage ragging white people, it's 'funny'. If Carlos Mencia is on stage talking about African Americans it's 'funny' but if a white man said -anything- about any group of people he's automatically labeled a racist. He'll be put on CNN,NBC,Fox and any other media for it. As a white male that grew up in Louisiana, I've seen things from both sides. I know where to go and where not to go though, especially in New Orleans. Is it racist that I feel my life is in danger when I drive through the streets because of the violence?

The other thing that bothers me is that not everyone is 'American' if they live here. I don't know about other countries, but here you're African American, Latin American, etc but if you're white you're just white. I'm of Irish and German heritage, but I'm white. My family has only been in America for maybe 100 years, but I'm not Irish-American. Titles need to be dropped if everyone is going to feel equal. No African America, no Asian-American, if you're a citizen you're American.

Every race/culture goes through something. My grandpa tells stories of how his dad was treated when his family first moved here. The LGBTG groups are going through it right now, eventually it'll go away and some new controversy will arise and it too will pass in time.

As long as ignorance exists some sort of hatred will exist.

Before continuing, I must admit I enjoy your threads.

Now, when you come across a member of the "KKK" or some other racist club for old men, you'll usually notice that they're set back to the beliefs their ancestor held in the 1800s. It's not a bright lot. As for racism overall, it'll always exist. Even if everyone in the world was the same, so for example, a darker colored skin. Different groups would still exist within, and as would racism.

Woops, posted that before even contributing, haha.

I think racism is still around because of the attention it gets from individuals and the media. The presence of anti-racism programs, like affirmative action and equal opportunity employment, perpetuates racism. I personally know many people who don't need that type of governmental support, but it doesn't make sense to turn it down either. As long as our leaders view minorities as groups that can be bought over with the "gift" of more support, there will be racism. Trying to fight racism doesn't remove racism but instead defines it. The last thing I want to say is that casual racism justifies racism elsewhere in society.

I'd have to go with a feeling of superiority and dominance. Racism i think has many forms it doesn't have to be just skin color it can be religous views sexual prefrences wealth standing and alot of other things. To me racist and prejudice are the same thing they both have sterotypes and including looking down upon someone else based strictly off of something that doesn't have to do with who they are as a human. I believe racism exists because although we are all created equally we live in a competitive world where you goal is to become better then others to succeed even if that means putting them down in order to gain that self of pride. Altough you don't actually have to be better then someone else to be successful you just have to be better then who you are/were; but we perfer to take the more competive route which leads to alot of fighting, wars, crimes, racism, prejudice acts. Also other contributing factors can be how you were raised and what you were taught Christians/Cathloics hate Atheist with a passion strictly based off of their religous views or lack of. But aside from that their are good Christians/Catholics and their are good Atheist but their are also bad Christians and bad Atheist neither one has any true superiority over each other, but since they so strongly disagree with each on their views its caused a hate so strong that the Christians/Catholics dispise anyone with the title Athiest. Not saying that every Christian hates Atheists but many hardcore Christians/Cathloics do. Same goes for how we as Americans view Arab people as Terrorists although 80% of them aren't and are caring people or how many Straight people view Gays as wrong and discusting and a discrace and how many Rich people view the poor as Lazy uneducated and weak. Its all a pride thing it happens with all races with all people even in Runescape community well thats my opinion i'd write more but i have to go for a bit - Artie

I believe that racism exists because of the fact that there are people within this world that are unable to take responsibility for their own life. I find in many cases racism is caused by some sort of social issue. For example I often hear racist people blaming their loss of a job on the "fucking ********s" Or the "fucking paki's" When in reality the loss of the job is due to the fact the person in question is lazy, unmotivated or just plain bad at their job and someone who is willing to put in the effort and do the job properly. The hatred and blame that the person who lost their job feels then rubs off on the future generations and therefore continues the line.

Racism is an understandable result of what you see on the streets. African Americans in the United States and North Africans/Arabs in Europe cause more crime than Caucasians and usually make up (almost) the majority of prisoners in prisons while still being a minority.

Now, is this because of their skin color? Indirectly, yes. The skin color of a person indicates where he or she originates from and people from Africa/The Middle East usually didn't enjoy a good education and have different moral codes (such as women being inferior to men in Islam). This can explain their behaviour in Western countries.

Integration is also a problem, when people don't feel like they're a part of society they are less likely to have a problem with hurting that society.

I still view racism as something negative though, racism only causes more anger among immigrants causing even more problems (more crime for example).

racism in our generation mainly lays within 'banter' I honestly think once all the protests/bombing's etc calm down, then races such as Muslims won't be targeted, as usual race remarks (not saying all) but most of the remarks come within social media 'joke/banter/troll' pages, nothing is usually meant by it, it just gets said for a laugh, not saying it's funny myself, but cmon everybody's had a little giggle over something like it before. ;)
