Obtaining dialogue from NPC that changes with every interaction.

I'm trying to create my first script but I'd like to clear something up before I begin. Is there a way to obtain the dialogue from an npc for use in your code? The specific dialogue i'd like to use changes every interaction.

Think of something like Sherlock who asks for specific items during clue steps. How would I be able to record, in my code,  what item he'd like me to get?
