Mine has always worked with the lid closed... Weird.

This will make it function completly as if it were open lid.

 

If you're power concerned look into it more ^_^

ive always botted on my laptop and i just press fn+f6 for the screen to turn black

mac overheats to mad temps, mine struggled when i did that... especially using the program "insomnia"

i bought a fan for it that goes under the comp to keep it cool and i have smcFanControl running so it can be cool

Leave it open so it can cool off and just turn of the screen.
