Why are so many ppl online scammers compared to RL?

Featured Replies

After getting involved with this site recently and runescape/online things in general, I find that the ratio of scammers to honest people is higher online. That is, more people choose to scam online than steal in real life.

Do you guys think that the nature of MOST people is to lie/scam/cheat? But people in real life don't do it simply because the consequences can be greater?

For ex, I bought like 10k yew longs without checking to see the guy actually traded me willow longs and I was scammed about 5m. I just laughed, it really gets me thinking about how people are so comfortable with being such liars/scammers.

I honestly would never scam... If I did, whatever I stole would just feel wrong to have. How can people scam and be so comfortable with it?

I know perhaps I'm taking it to extremes since it's just pixels.. but really if you scam 100m it's equivalent to stealing about $300... Ideas?

the internet is anonymous that's the only reason.

Generally there is less risk involved I assume. Plus they can hide behind their keyboard and keep the size of their e-penis intact.

The chance of success is higher and risk is lower.

Plus stealing irl =/= scamming.

Those stupid people that call you every other day offering you house security and telling you won the lottery when you never signed up is scamming. Which would probably be harder to do.

It's sad to think that...

Definitely less risk. When you see how someone treats people anonymously, I believe that's when character really shows. And it's just disheartening I suppose to see so many people being dishonest.

I think scamming and stealing goes hand in hand. It's basically acquiring something at the expense of another without approval. I agree with this though.

Well you're comparing stealing gold, to stealing IRL money. The only reason you're doing this is cause you're comparing the rate of gold to cash, which shouldn't be compared since one of the two aren't the same and wouldn't be considered by some.

Online scams for cash go on in the streets, scams on the phone go on, scams in emails, scams in games.

In the streets : Very scary

On the phone: Hard to do,

emails: hard to pull off

games: semi

When you compare scamming games tho, in this mention you should  only compare it in a way that should be used for in-game currency and nothing else. Otherwise you're changing arguments

You raise valid points. But for people that rwt on RS, rsgp has rl value. So if both people rwt, and one scams the other, would you agree it is the same as stealing irl money?

Scamming over the internet when relating to video games is usually always anonymous which gives people a sense of safety when pulling off such a scheme, however, they do not realize that the actions they commit to over the internet or in any circumstance for that matter directly effect you as a person. The virtual world, and the life we live on a daily basis go hand and hand, and for someone to scam over the internet truly is disheartening.

I agree completely.... I've noticed people's actions on a game go hand in hand with their actions in real life. Someone that scams on a daily basis obviously gets similar thoughts in real life.

That's an unfair addition in the sense that it's a variable.

Ok ok fine I'll rephrase myself. Scamming on rs is sometimes(most likely ;) ) equivalent to stealing in real life.

Would you call luring scamming then?

As that is basically playing on peoples stupidity, which again not checking the trade screens is kinda the same.

Just luring involves being more of a snake, more persuasive.

I personally think if you get scammed on OSRS its your own fault for not checking the screens, its really not hard.

It's like going to a shop and buying 10 chocolate cookies, not checking the bag and coming home with 2 small circles of shit.

You just wouldn't leave without checking.

In this case you accepted that trade and 5m must have been easy money for you, if it was real money or actually meant something you would have checked the transaction, I'm sure you check your real life receipts/cash balance in order to make sure what you have been buying is charged correctly etc.

What about xfering between servers and selling and buying accounts?

Me getting tricked out of 5m was merely an example. I'm talking also (and really, more) about people charging back bought rsgp on paypal, recovering sold accounts, etc.
