Majoring in Computer Science

Featured Replies

What's the difference (if any) between CS (Computer Science) and CP (Computer Programming)?

Is there any programming in CS?

Computer programming isn't a real major, at least at the schools I looked at. Computer science looks at the ideas and theory and yes there is A LOT of programming in CS.

I see CSE - Computer Science Engineering. o.o

Honestly getting a major in Computer Science is pretty stupid. I mean yeah it is beneficial to go and do this, but everything you could learn at a college you can learn online. Hell, MIT puts their entire Computer Science course on Youtube every year for anyone to view...

In my opinion it's better to go for something like Biochemical Engineering, or another advanced topic like that that would be nearly impossible to learn on your own without the right equipment.

yet big corporations (IMB, Google, ect) look @ your college major and GPA, rather than just telling them "Oh yeah, I learned everything off youtube. Hire me pls"

Then make them notice you! Their not going to ignore someone who hacks into their servers and dumps their whole database ;)

If you don't intend to go into a field where a computer science degree would be needed you're advice is very sound, however if you actually want a job somewhere that requires you to have a degree in computer science telling them "its k i utubed everything" is not going to work.

Anyways back on topic, I am in my 2nd semester of computer science (working on associates right now) and it's really not difficult. The programming classes are very enjoyable but it's easy to get bogged down in all the circuit oriented classes, learning what inductors, capacitors, transistors etc. do and how they operate in different types of circuits can get pretty damn boring if it's not your thing.  At least at my college 2nd semester of computer science (according to my academic advisor) is the hardest and so far it does not seem hard, just tedious. Hope this response was helpful.

Not trying to get legal action taken upon me :)

Honestly Im using CS as a backup major if I don't get into medical school.  Thanks for the advice! ^_^

This is the most illogical post I've ever seen.

Np, my gf starts med school next year hopefully. From what I've seen of her schoolwork so far it's much more difficult than what I'm doing lol.

I'm taking grade 10 computer science in grade 10. It's easy.

Im taking CS atm also and it's hella easy..its way too easy. Its just my teacher though, I know it is. I want to know how hard it is in college :)

What's wrong with CS? what makes Comp Engin. better?

High school computer science is basically a college's version of intro to computer science. It is one of the most basic classes. You don't get farther than basic OOP.

I made a 5 on the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam(which is the highest score) and the hardest topic on the exam was multi dimensional arrays and searching/sorting algorithms.

Computer Science is a good degree but I'd look into some other topic possibly like Wireless Engineering(Software), Software Engineering, or even Bioinformatics(if you like biology + programming lol).

You're not going to be a well rounded individual if you go to college for just Computer Science. All I'm saying is it's not a skill you NEED college for to develop.

So you're saying someone who wishes to get a job in computer science should watch YouTube videos instead of attending university? Sure if they want to be self-employed this is fine, but the experience is not nearly the same and I'd argue not comparable.

now im not saying degrees dont have a big influence, but if in your portfolio ( you will be asked to show projects you've worked on), you clearly have a very good understanding, depending on the place they could ignore your education.

would you rather hire some1 that can make astounding work, or some1 who has a piece of paper and can make mediocre stuff?

Problem being you won't be working on projects in the first place if you don't have that degree since you won't be getting hired to work on any projects without a degree. So unless you make something yourself that is at the least fairly impressive you won't be getting a job without a degree.

Having a degree is only the first step, actually showing your work and proving you have knowledge in the field is what separates you from the rest. Anyone can get a piece of paper saying they finished a class but only few can actually do anything with it.
