How do I suck? A demotion is a demotion regardless of whether he resigned or not. If he wasn't demoted, he'd still be at whatever higher rank he previously had.

Demote/demotion isn't and shouldn't be considered as something negative, but it's often made that way by people with lower rank who can't see why someone would resign or by the ignorant. Maybe both.

Just because you resigned doesn't mean anything, a demotion is still a demotion. It's nothing bad, just a term.
