I'd personally recommend just trying to create whatever, and whenever you get really stuck you ask somebody for help. The best way to learn programming is by screwing it up many times, and learning what you did wrong yourself. Sure, mentoring could help, but it's most likely going to be less effective than just doing it yourself :P
