You have to be following your topic to receive the notification 

Alright well that seems easy but my suggestion is to get notified through the bell without following your topics. But it doesnt matter that much it takes 2 seconds to follow your topic yet its just pointless.

You can set it so that you automatically follow topics that you start. in the drop menu on the same settings page

What I do is I have my phone on the table and it starts to shake whenever I get a PM or so, as its connected with my email.
