Starting a Worm Farm

Featured Replies

I enjoy fishing. I've been at my grandparents for almost a week, fishing every day. I'm a fan of live bait, like worms or crickets, and they work really well at the pond. I've caught about 25 fish this week, the biggest being a 1.5 pound Bass. Not to big, but I hope he'll grow by next year (I always catch and release).

Anyway, I'm starting a worm farm. I'm using a 50 Gallon Fishtank (previously used for my Bearded Dragon). I plan to fill the fish tank with Peat Moss and start out with 1,000 red wigglers. I will feed them 4 times a week with vegetable scraps, and mist them 3 times a week with a water mister. The should double in population every 3 months

The reason I'm posting this is because the money needed to buy these worms and moss will be obtained from the OSBot market. Hopefully I can get enough in the next week to purchase the worms smile.png

That is awesome man, we have a large pond in our back-yard and fishing is so much fun. I have caught a handful of catfish and bass but usually all I come up with is brim. Live bait always seems to catch them faster then hot-dog, bread etc. Though I have never tried my hand at a worm farm that sounds pretty awesome. If you get any sweet catches make sure to post a picture of it. I will do the same. biggrin.png

Goodluck with your farm!

I wish you luck.

Fishing is thought to be for old people, but fuck those who think so.

When you have a fish on your line, it's a pretty great feeling.

Although not comparable to an orgasm. ph34r.png

Will 10,000 worms actually live in a 50 gallon tank? ohmy.png

I have a bearded dragon, what happened to yours man? I have a special needs one. Well it is normal, but they thought it would be a special needs one, it has a bent spine.

Good luck on your farm. I love to fish, we just use lures for bass as they bite lures more than live bait. Blue Gill are very lazy and won't chase stuff like spinner bait and such.

Thanks.

Wow, didn't know that they lived that long.

I might be getting one soon. How much do you think I will need to get set up?

As for the worm farm, good luck. Sounds like you're going to be doing a lot of fishing. I'm so jealous, I love fish. Well, I love eating them of course. Heh :p

^ Depends are you going to buy a baby, or an adult. You will eventually need a 40 G long tank. You can start them in a 10 gallon, but will need to be moved in a month or two. You will need around 200-300 to start up I'm sure of it. You need a uvb + heat light + substrate, never use sand, or any walnut shell substrate, Always use tile, reptile carpet, they will eat the sand when trying to eat food, and they can't digest it. You will also need a hide, a water bowl, and a food dish. You will need two lamp fixtures. One for the uvb and one for the heat. You will also need a thermometer to check the temperatures of the tank. I will link you to a care sheet.

This. I had a 50 Gallon tank with clay and a mossy carpet, logs, and things for him to hide in, including a heating rock. I had three bowls. Two I used for food and one larger one for water. I had one UV light that stretched almost the whole tank and two heat lights (one broke). I had a thermometer, but rarely checked it.

They used to say heat rocks were good, but a lot of dragons were getting burned by them, because the heat rocks got to hot. I have a heat rock that just gets warm, not even close to burning. :)  Just make sure when you are going to buy a beardie you have time + money to afford them. You will also need to check to see if there is a vet around you that can do this sort of reptile. You never want your reptile to get sick and not be able to take him to the vet.

Also if i was you i would go to beardeddragon.org, or faunaclassifieds.com and try to find an adoption, it is great so no beardie is left homeless and not able to be afforded. I took mine from a women who breeds them and this one had a curved spine so she couldn't sell it, she planned on giving it away and i was the lucky one who received. :)
