If you want to look for a certain thread you can go to the place it would be found and refine the search to threads you created, threads you replied in, and a few more things. I agree that the search bar through the site IS more efficient than google, but when it doubt, google it out. Requires less to be stored on database which, IMO, is reason enough not to extend it.
