Crappy Server

Featured Replies

Recently I have come into a fairly old server, It's processor is a small amount below the average of today's, same with almost every other part other than ram... I can get the specs later today (When I'm not as lazy as I am now)...

Anyway, the point of this post is to ask:  What do you think I should host/do with this new found jewel?

P.S. At the end of the summer I will be coming into an almost 1gbps upload and download speed so that may help with whatever is decided on.

Is it an option for me to rent it out if I get bored with it for a cheap price, or do you think no one will want to use it?

Because I haven't installed an OS for it yet, I have to look at the dell site for specs, this is what I've come up with..

Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors

48GB of fully-buffered DIMM memory

3 300GB SATA Hard drives

Isn't Debian just a base platform for Linux?

Also, I was thinking of either hosting a forum, a rsps (which could get risky), or a game server like Garry's Mod.

edit: I've read up on Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint, and have decided on Ubuntu for now, only because Linux mint is only desktop based, and at this moment, Ubuntu seems easier to use.  In the near future I will try to slowly shift into Debian, unless Linux Mint makes a server based version.l

edit: yes debian is linux based but its a completely separate offshoot of linux now.
