What defines a Intellectual Discussion?

Featured Replies

I believe this to be anything which has some argumental side within it and in which one can have an opinionated discussion about.

What do you guys think?

Well yea, use of proper grammar. Some witty sense of humor and pretty much having a friendly banter with someone who has enough knowledge on the same discussing field.

Actually, intellectual discussions don't involve proper grammar, it depends on your native language, plenty of people know English but cannot express it properly, therefore making them look illiterate, which I think is total shit.

The fewer communication barriers the better the discussion as there are no misunderstandings. Lack of knowledge in a specific language is a communication barrier

My biggest pet peeve is arguing with people that have no facts/evidence to prove their opinion. Someone told me they hate Mitt Romney (didn't like him either but still had evidence to back my opinion) and I asked them why. They told me they didn't like him because he was a mean person. When I asked "how so" they said "just because". I guess everyone has a right to their own opinion but it just bothers me when people go around flaunting it without any argument to back their opinion up.

I believe you meant "What defines an intellectual discussion?"

Well, to answer your question, let's use politics.

We don't want some hooligan posting on the forums about how he hates Obama because his parents do.

Perhaps one claiming doesn't appreciate his healthcare and education reforms would be acceptable.. and open-sided discussion that has plenty of facts to establish valid points.

Healthcare is the best that could happen in my opinion.

I disagree.

If we nationalize healthcare in America, our doctors could no longer afford their Bugatti and multimillion dollar mansions.

Shit, not to mention that our pharmaceutical companies could no longer charge you $1,200 for a 12 oz tube of rash cream.

Our entire health sector would collapse at the lack of a profit.

I work at a restaurant with on the dot 24 other front of house staff, all employed under the company name, therefore declaring it as a business applicable for Obama's healthcare plan.  He must offer healthcare to all of his employees, how is he (the owner) to afford it with such a small business?

Would like to debate this with you but i'll hold my tongue and try to stay on topic ;P haha

Problem with nationalized healthcare is that it's good for the less wealthy side of people and terrible for the more wealthy side... I worked hard for my money, I'm going to get the best private health care I can possibly afford, which obamacare screws up.

Also an intellectual discussion probably doesn't involve anyone that has a half naked girl as their signature...

Let's be intellectual, why do people consider breasts and vaginal inappropriate? Religion. As an atheist, I really don't care what the person is wearing or if anything at all, if it was appropriate, I would walk to school naked, but sadly, there are people who are believers and frown upon that. So having a "half naked" girl as a signature doesn't make you less intellectual. Just putting my opinion out there.

It shows shallowness and immaturity in most cases. I love sex, I love naked women, and anything about the topic, but when you're showcasing women like that in your signature it's just stupid and pointless, in my opinion. If you like women, go out and have relations, it's just stupid to have it in a signature - it's not you in the picture, it's not your girlfiend, it's not your creation, it's nothing to do with you, instead it just reeks of a forbidden lust that most likely will never be fulfilled. Just my own intellectual observations, but my opinions too.

And I'm an atheist too.

So it is best for the overall population, since the wealth is only in hands of a small percentage of people. However, I see the point you made. I'm not entirely sure how it works with Obama, but what I do know is that it works (or at least better than in America) in European countries.
