I would go with Steel bars if i were you, the loss/xp is way less then alching and you get smith exp as well (eventually swap for mith bars at 50)

Yes it's less XP/h but I'm sure there are scripts for this (if not, I can make a very basic one) Double check if steel bars is profit, but if it is I strongly recommend training your smith for that

High alch is always loss, atleast 150gp/per if you take an item you can easily buy in bulk I believe Superheat is profit (forgive me if I am wrong) for steel, mith, addy and rune.

I believe that the best way to merch is to choose a "sector of activity" by checking several factors : your budget, the possible profit (look at certain items and remmber/write down the price trend : price ppl buy at, price ppl sell at - you will notice that it usually changes depending on the time of the day as the demand/supply ratio is not stable) When you get several items you feel confident in (stable prices, but with a little fluctuation), go for it! (it's always best to do multiple items at once) I know I didn't directly answer your question, but maybe this will help!
