Can i just setup a bunch of virtual machines and run a proxy on each virtual machine mirror client? (like in the proxy setup guide by vyrael)

In theory yes.

 

Keep in mind that virtual machines on the same host compete for resources, so unless you have a really good machine it's going to be difficult to run many mirror clients.

got a 4790k, so im assuming ill be able to run around 6.

Memory would be the biggest concern in my opinion. Depending on the requirements of the OS/mirror client/osrs client, might add up I'm guessing 2GB a VM, but not sure how the mirror client is with memory leaks as of late. Either way good luck!

Running 1.5GB of memory per VM on mixed windows 7/8 virtual machines here. Performance is quite adequate. I would say six VMs would be about right with a 4790k processor wise. A big thing you may need to watch is disk IO as that starts becoming your bottleneck trying to run that many VMs.
