I have written my own, but this kind of stuff should be included in basic api.

    Mine is currently for trees, and its not jet finished. 
    Why is tree different from other objects? Well tree usually takes more than one Tile so its not an universal one.

    a getNearestObjectWithInteraction(String interaction) would be useful as well, and could be done for NPCs, Items, etc. too

    I don't support this one. You can easily just used a filter to do this. Sorry :P
