Purpose of college?

Featured Replies

I agree with everyone who is saying college is a waste. Be honest here, who really goes for the education anymore? It's all about the parties. If partying didn't exist do you really think people would now pay $20k a year to get a solid education? It's all a scam, and imposed on us by the media that it is "required" to go to college. College is merely a tool to become more knowledgeable, you can either use the tool or not.

I'm a senior now and next year I'm going to a community college. At the same time I'm going to be at home increasing my programming knowledge through online sources, and looking for any easy consulting jobs that I could do. I'm NEVER going to be the guy that has to wake up at a certain time and be in the office or else I get fired, I'm working for myself.

Are you kidding me? College is not all about the parties. If you think that way than you're one of the no-lifes that drop out after the first year because their GPA is less than 1. Come on now. I pay 40k a year to take the classes I need to succeed in the field of mechanical engineering. If I went out and partied every night, I would have never made it this far. Please get your head out of your ass. College is about the networking also. The people who I've interviewed with all see the name of the college I go to and are immediately impressed. They know the caliber of the students that succeed from my school and do not take it as a joke.

On the flip side, sure I could get a degree in the arts and party every chance I get, but why would I spend 160k to get a useless degree with much fun vs a very powerful degree in engineering with some fun?

I'd sure like to see how the car you drive would've turned out if the engineers never went to college to build it. Think back to how chevy and ford was back in the 60's. That's a horror in itself.

You obviously weren't a very social kid, but most kids do go to college solely for the parties. Yes they still work and get decent grades, I'm not saying they don't, but the main calling college has is the freedom you get being away from your parents. Your in an area full of people looking to branch out, things are going to happen.

And I'm not talking about people who go to colleges like Harvard or Princeton...I mean the majority of state and private schools.

I do go to a state school. I am very social. The difference between me and you is maturity. This is 160k out of my pocket. I pay 600$ a month in loans. You think I'm going to fuck around and screw myself over later in life because I want to party? Hell no. Do I go to parties? Of course! I'm sure you do too and you don't even go to college. So don't give me that bullshit excuse that college is solely for partying. Maybe for you it is because you've seen too many college movies, but for my classmates and I it sure as hell isn't. There is a huge difference between the kids that have daddy pay for college vs the ones that are paying for it them selves. That's where the maturity comes in. You have no idea how great the first job offer I received felt. It was a glorious moment to feel that what I spent 3 years so far perusing was in the near future.

tl;dr if you want to fuck around you go to community college. If you want to peruse a highly skilled profession that required a degree, you go to college.

lol calm down big boy.

Of course if you want a job that requires a degree you go to college...but if you're a person who doesn't you don't. Simple as that. And how does maturity have to do with either of us? Whatever I decide to do I'm paying for, so your whole argument with that is completely void. As for "making a bullshit excuse" by saying college is solely for partying you probably live in a different area then I do, or like I said don't go to actual parties, if you think people wouldn't pay the same amount you are just to party. All I'm saying is college is used by people for the wrong reasons now, and they know because it is expected of you to go that they can raise the price to whatever they want. It's a proven fact that most of the time the college you go to doesn't even matter, on average kids that go to ivy leagues compared to kids at state schools make the same amount. Plus college sets you up to have a JOB, not a career.

Correct, if you want to work somewhere that doesn't require a degree, you don't go to college.

So on that note, everyone who is in college is looking for a degree that well get them started into a well paying career. (minus the art majors)

Granted, there are people who throw away their opportunities by partying, but a large majority of us do not. you can still be social and not flunk out of school. I don't know why you're making a big deal about partying. People who work full time still go to parties. Are you saying they don't?

"All I'm saying is college is used by people for the wrong reasons now"

Where are your numbers? I'd like to see some comprehensive data to back that up. As of now, you pulled that out of your ass out of either ignorance or pure jealousy.

I have not seen one valid reason that you have posted proving that kids only go to college to party.

Give me some valid sources to your accusations or we are done here. I'm looking for a valid argument here, not a shit throwing contest.

It is a joke. College/University does not prepare you for a career. It simply gives you a piece of paper saying you are qualified, and it also gives you confidence. Completing High School/Post-secondary does not make you a smart person, and does not mean you are educated. Even if you finished with 100%. It just means that you were able to play the game, and put up with the pathetic system. So, to answer your question, the purpose is to breed out these kids who will complete menial tasks without giving it a second thought, then telling you that you are smart, educated, and an asset to society, when all you have is debt, and a piece of paper.

Someone didn't graduate.

....you do know we pretty much agree on the subject matter, you're just taking the things I say literally.

Of course everyone wants to go to college and get a degree and not solely for the partying. What you seem to be failing to understand is that without the thrill factor (partying, drinking, freedom away from home) the majority of people that go to huge colleges would decrease. More people would consider going to smaller ones, instead of the biggies like ASU and party centrals like Bloomsburg. No I don't have statistics to prove it, but it's relatively common sense.

No. Large colleges have more funding for better programs. Why do you think most of the top schools in the country have the most students?

I use to think the same exact thoughts as you back when I was a sophmore. That I could be self-employed for my entire life because I was always business and tech savvy.

But there is a certain time in your life where you may NEED stability for financing a car, a mortgage, hell even supporting a family. Freelancing programming jobs are not enough to feed a family or pay the rent unless you're working with credible company. But credible companies will require some sort of education. Maybe your consulting job won't be successful as you think.

College is a great safety net for the "what if's" in life.

College is not useless.

Believe it or not but there are very few people in society that can teach themselves engineering, medicine, thermodynamics, physics, etc...

Interesting also. I fail to see where you are coming from.

So your basing your argument over stats that were taken by ASKING people different things. There is no proof any of it is true.

Completely agreed. On the topic of myself for all I know I could be a complete failure, or an overnight billionaire. College is a great safety net, yes, anyone who goes and does half decent can get a decent paying job and live comfortably their whole lives. But what about the big dreamers, the next Mark Zuckerbergs? Yes they can go to college, but their not going to use their degree at all. They will use the KNOWLEDGE they used from going (which now a days you can get for free online) to better themselves. As Zappa stated above, college merely turns people into robots designed to fill in jobs, not critical thinkers.

My whole degree is critical thinking. What are you trying to say?

Nope, no critical thinking here
