I have downloaded the client, and when I double click on the client or even right click and open using java, the client opens then doesn't let me log in.

Tried it. Rebooted my pc the lot, but no joy. 
It works on my laptop which is strange

Try to run jarfix
https://johann.loefflmann.net/en/software/jarfix/index.html

If that does not work:
Make sure you have java 8 installed and remove the others
After that run jarfix again 

i have just installed the new client (2.4.47), however i'm still getting the same error, 

I have un installed then reinstalled java 8, ran the  javafix, reset my pc. turned off all firewalls. tried again but still not loading in.
