Stupid question. Everyone knows that the kids killed them in their "first they're sour" outrage. 

And now they regret it which is why they have a period of "then they're sweet". It's just them remembering how far they went with their parents and don't wish the same for you, though they can't stop their sour nature entirely, thus the need for the sour actions.
