The only thing I can think of is that somehow, maybe, they're able to check how many nodes/bounce points the end IP has to go through to get back to them, and that identifies whether or not someone is using a VPN/Proxy. The only thing I can think of to bypass this is by maybe using a dynamic IP in correlation, because I can't imagine they'd be able to lock an account because of that. Then again, who knows.
