So I go to download the client on my laptop instead of my desktop and it downloads but it wont open. It pops up a window asking to search for programs to run it on, when my desktop i click on it and it pops right up. I've been battling with it for an hour trying to figure it out and I can't find a way.

You need to download and install the latest version of java on your laptop, it is trying to locate a program to run the software, by default it should pick Java. However, if you do not have Java installed, or if it is outdated that can cause problems.
