I was looking at some over ear headphones for Christmas. My friend has a pair of v-modas: http://v-moda.com/crossfade-lp2-matte-black-metal/ and he really likes them. Any thoughts or suggestions on what is good in the $100-150 price range?

Is optic important to you?

To be honest go for the crossfades. 

Worth the extra 50 dollars.

No but srsly these are very good headphones if not the best monitor headphones under 200$.

However they are not the best for outside (pretty big).
