Obesity is now a disease

Featured Replies

I know right.

It's just pathetic that they would consider obesity a disease.

And are you sure that number is reliable? It doesn't seem like 33% is an accurate number. Even in Walmart, I don't see that many obese people. Wouldn't be surprised if it were right though.

You are making a comment like that without understanding what a disease is.

However, it is pathetic that people have the disease of obesity; it is easily controlled, except for like .005% percent of the population who have a psychological disorder that makes them gasp for food 24/7.

Also, maybe your perception of what obese and morbidly obese, in terms of body fat, is skewed. Or you could live in a statistically healthier area.

I think most people misunderstand what a disease is. A disease is an abnormal condition that effects the body of an organism. So being morbidly obese fits the definition.

Best solution for obesity? Non that wouldn't violate my own views on free enterprise.

The most practical solution? - People realizing that it isn't McDonalds job to feed their fat fucking kids and themselves. 5lbs of carrots costs like 4$. That is alot of food. Try getting 5lb of food from fast food for 4$..... And they are good for you. People need to stop eating so much meat, and they definately eat too many carbs. Basically, bump up the veggies and fruits, cut out the processed shit. Walla, Presto.. instantly healthy people. Throw in exercise with proper diet and many ailments disappear.  Healthier people. (And pharmaceutical stocks will drop)

I think there should be different levels of obesity. Quite honestly i workout rather regularly and go swimming at least 3-4 times a week, yet i'm still 285lbs. By their charts, i'm considered obese, however if you see me in person i just look like a big guy.. (6ft3) Also calling it a disease makes it sound worse, i've no idea how people think that'd make anyone feel any better about their situation...

Its not a matter of how people "feel." We live in too much of a feel good society. Shit can be going to hell in a hand basket, but its okay as long as we feel good right?

By definition it is a disease. No need to give it different classifications because that would require a diagnosis. Any practitioner can easily judge the severity of it by running a few simple tests, if they are given a reason to do so. There are some healthy people that are just big. But lets not lie to ourselves, if you ate strict 2000 calorie diet with no processed foods or sugar, you would weigh less. You know it, and I know it. We all cheat, but its no reason to change the definition of disease to accommodate people. We should conform our views to fit the facts.

Yous guys need to re-evaluate how to define things.

If an issue such as obesity matches certain criteria it can (and usually is) defined under the correct category based on the definition of the category it is placed under.

Personally, I don't think it is a disease. However, it doesn't matter what my opinion is unless it's correct; they have correctly categorized obesity, unless the criteria to be a disease is changed.

It definetly should not be a disease. That is just stupid. Its crazy that fat people can get a handicap tag to park in handicap spots

that's like calling crack addiction a disease ya its bad for you but for the most part you made youself that way and can change it with your decisions.  At least 90% of fat people are that way because of poor diet and exercise, however there are a select few caused genetic or other causes unrelated to diet and exercise.  grouping them all together as a disease is ridiculous

I don't think obesity should be classified as a disease... You can have other diseases or syndromes which lead to obesity but I'm pretty sure that ANYONE can lose weight if they tried hard enough.

A disease? Really?

How on earth can they class this as a disease!

Cancer, is a disease.

Being a fat ass is not!

People that do support obesity as a disease because of the definition of the word "disease":

  1. A particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people.

By this logic people with blue eyes have a disease.  It's a fact that, in sunlight, light-eyed people have more of a glare factor and they are believed to be worse drivers at night.  I would say that adversely affects this group...?

Only... people with blue eyes were (more than likely) born that way.  So, in my opinion, that warrants more of a disease than getting yourself good and fat.  But is THIS really what "they" were thinking of when they made the word "disease"? unsure.png

In my opinion, this is right there with alcoholism; I believe being obese could be due to an addiction problem.  But "normal" or "average" people don't want to see obese people getting special treatment because of their self-induced fatness.

it's also easy for people to get upset over obesity is when money is being taken out of their paychecks for insurance.  Keep in mind your employer grabs money from you for EVERYONE's insurance, not just yours.  If your company doesn't already have a wellness program in place, talk to them about it.  Log healthy choices to earn points and have a point quota.  Anyone who doesn't meet the quota pays extra. Blood work, routine physicals, etc.

It sort of worries me what kind of message this will send to children across the United States... ahhh those poor kids. sad.png  How many will die in their 40's thanks to those awful parents? angry.png

Child abuse:

the physical or emotional or sexual mistreatment of children.

Well, Obesity As a Disease supporters... by definition.................................

Parents administering a disease to their children!

I think I am getting the disease now. I have been off work for a few months with my back being hurt and I'm gaining weight.

oh NO! F%# K your back, go run a marathon before you catch this rabid disease!

but no srsly you should probably see a doctor about your back biggrin.png

* and your weight also if you're that concerned laugh.png

A disease doesn't have to be contagious peoplesleep.png   But there is a quick fix... Get rid of all fast food restaurantsblink.png
