Well, it chopped the yew tree down and it starts to look for the tree though there is no tree.

It worked to a degree, i saw mine avoiding it also but then somehow i got another broken axe later on.

My axe broke as well, after about 3,5hours (V1.8). At yew's in seers village.

 

If you could explain how I can see the tree's ID I could maybe help you fixing it.

hmm. Could be the distance between the player and the yew. Since yews are bigger and you can be further away from them while chopping. I'll increase the distance possible just to make sure.

click on the gearwheel and select NPC info. If you see an ent on your screen it will show the ID
