Purpose of college?

Featured Replies

To prove that you have gone through 4 years of rigorous testing and have the ability to learn new things in your field individually. Going to college isn't to prepare you for the real world, it's a test to see if you will make it in the real world. At least for engineering it is

It is a joke. College/University does not prepare you for a career. It simply gives you a piece of paper saying you are qualified, and it also gives you confidence. Completing High School/Post-secondary does not make you a smart person, and does not mean you are educated. Even if you finished with 100%. It just means that you were able to play the game, and put up with the pathetic system. So, to answer your question, the purpose is to breed out these kids who will complete menial tasks without giving it a second thought, then telling you that you are smart, educated, and an asset to society, when all you have is debt, and a piece of paper.

Yes please, teach yourself to become a civil engineer, chemist, chartered accountant, statistician. All of these fields and numerous others are simple concepts that you learn playing 'the game'.

Furthermore, if you attend a half decent college or university you're able to gain your experience in co-op programs and pay off your debt during these work periods. In addition, said work periods typically result in job offers following the completion of your certificate, diploma or degree.

The top 2-3 Students immediately get job offers from companies. the rest are left to find a job themselves.

Right, that's why I have several friends who have either graduated with their Civil Engineering tech diploma or degrees (currently EITs) making between $80-110k and completely debt free.

Of all of my friends doing so, only one was a straight A student, the rest were c+ to b students.

If you're trying to get into a specialized market like Medicine, Dentistry, Law, etc. Yes an individual will face a lot stiffer competition for jobs. If you want to pursue a career in such a field you have to understand what you are getting yourself into and be prepared to pay the price. Otherwise it is much more logical and cost effective to pursue a career in a field where there is currently or will always be demand for your skill-set (accounting, engineering, trades, teaching, etc).

Lets cool it down guys. This has gotten out of control I just wanted some suggestions to write my thesis.

Job offers do not mean you are qualified, or smart. School appeals to people who can not do things on their own because they get to partake in the system even though it means nothing. Go to college if you want to get laid, if you want an education, go to the library.

Facepalm.

Who in their right mind would offer a job to someone whom they did not believe to be qualified or educated in that field of work? Are you going to hire someone of the street to do your tax-return? Promote your home-made business? No. Unless you are utterly retarded and have no problem jeopardizing your business' image.

You can't be a doctor without going to college.

You can't be a lawyer without going to college.

You can't be successful without going to college.

Do you want to make 30 grand a year working at McDonald's? Barely able to support a family?

To get a high paying job you need to get to college.

Yet another person who has been brainwashed by the United States. You don't need college to succeed. Well maybe you do, but there are some people who are smart who can teach them selves things. Most of the extremely successful people dropped out of school. So you sir, are completely wrong.

College is only needed for stupid people. The only reason I would go to college is to show that I have had a "proper" education.

Money scam. What makes college so much different from high school that should make it so damn expensive? Everything is about money. People go broke after college, have debts, its just meh.

You're an idiot.

College is to weed out the people who fucked around in highschool and are content with making money by e-whoring, botting, and other various methods poor people can use the internet for.

I've had a girl in my class ask what a thesis is.

College is to make sure you're not a fuckwit and can be a normal human being with society.

Lets cool it down guys. This has gotten out of control I just wanted some suggestions to write my thesis.

Thesis is quite simple.

One pursues a higher education for the purpose of educating oneself in the projected field of their future job(s), and by doing so helps educate themselves in said field while gaining both experience and intellect about said field and also signaling to future employers a willingness to dedicate themselves to learning and understanding the field of their choice.

Because people are so engrossed in the system. If I apply for a job, they see that I completed University and that means I am qualified, but it does not mean that at all. It means that I spent 4+ years spending money, and studying for something that will not even prepare me for my career. And for a lot of people, University is partying, having sex, drinking, and probably doing a lot of drugs.

And the overwhelming positive correlation between education and income is simply meaningless.

Don't get me wrong, people do not need to go to college to become successful, but the likelihood of becoming successful is far greater with a higher education, and proper planning/insights into the current and future labor markets.

what the fuck is wrong with that? you're so butt hurt about this college shit man. I've been have sex, drinking, doing drugs and its been a fucking hell of a great ride. Made so many great friends and had such awesome experiences i would never have had if i didn't go for it. Slept with some pretty girls and some not so pretty girls and it was great either fucking way. Drugs are fun don't abuse them though. But you have to prioritize developing a strong work ethic above everything else at the end of the day and thats what its all about. Work hard play hard buddy.

You talk about going to school and wasting money to get some damn slip of paper, its a lot more than that.

Assuming your degree is specialized in something that actually has some merit. Like engineering, medicine, human kinetics, biology, economics, business, etc. Your 4 years of school would have set the foundation for preparing you for your career. Sure one could simply fuck around for the 4 years time, partying, dating, etc. and on paper have the same qualifications as you, but their lack of dedication or willingness to take their education seriously would become apparent quickly to any future employer.

Our education cannot give you a snapshot as to what your future employer is going to have you doing on a day-to-day basis which is what makes co-op opportunities so valuable. One wont fully -know- what their employer will be expecting until their hired and working for them. School on the other hand is what prepares you for understanding and accomplishing the work and duties assigned to you once you are hired.

Yes I know. Its not the education that matters (this would be for me), but only to add it on my job application to say I went to college. In my opinion college is overrated. But then again the majority of the worlds population is not very inteligent. I don't know, there are a lot of pros and cons of college.

I mostly see a bunch of idiots here tbh. College just gives you a very good chance at life. How else do you want to get a decent job? Do you want to make money through youtube or a blog? Or through runescape? I don't think so. Without a study you won't get a good chance at the market, unless you're one of those lucky ones who is good at investing or whatever you can come up with.

Don't study by all means, if you want to work in a supermarket later with barely enough money to do anything. So yeah, good luck. I know I'm going to finish this study for one.

I know. There are nothing wrong with these things. But you missed the point of what I said. I said that employers think that University has prepared the applicant for the job, but it has not done anything of the sort.
