Does 3.999... to infinity = 4?

Featured Replies

no. it will never touch the 4.0

This. It will be so extremely close, but it's no different than: 3.999999999999999999

I asked this to my very smart math teacher and he said "in theory : no , practically : yes because we can't use 3,999... to work with"

Your teacher should be fired.

I do not remember his exact words, but he talked about it for 30 minutes, we didn't had any class, he continued talking about it and giving other examples.

Like "I can never reach the door", it's 6 meter away, I can walk to half of it. I'll be at 3m, I can walk to the half of it again, I'll be at 1,5m and so on and on and on. "Will I ever reach the door? Yes and no, I'll eventually get there, but I won't reach it"

It's really hard to translate what he said as it was in dutch and it all made sense.

If you sum up all those halves you will get 6.
