Once i've setup the client and it grabs the parameters it says in the info box: Downloading client... but nothing happens after that, nothing shows up. There is only the grey screen

Let it sit for a few minutes.

If it doesn't load after about 10 minutes, the restart the client.

Let me know if this works!

Also make sure you have the up-to-date bot, when I was running 1.7.37 it would hang and was gray screen as-well..  1.7.38 doesn't hang for me.
