$1700 Mechanic bill

Featured Replies

I got one of my cars inspected for an out-of-province inspection. Sadly it failed but they wanted $1700 to change the brake pads and rotors. Like.. are you crazy? So im going to buy new parts and do it myself for $300-$400.

Looks like im in the wrong trade though. Might think about switching.

Damn that sucks, but replacing break pads aren't too difficult.

Mechanics are infamous for raping their customers on prices. Good job on calling him out on his BS price though. It's always good to have an idea in mind of what you should be paying for labor before negotiating the deal. On average mechnics charge 100$/hr, so this was definitely a BS price he gave you.

rack and pinion also needs to be replaces but that wasn't included in the quote he gave me. a new one is only $250 so its not too bad. Its my winter car so it will last me another few years if i replace these few things so it's worth it. My summer car is too torquey to drive in the winter

There are a lot of forums you can post you problem in before you go to the car garage. They will tell you an estimate price a authorized mechanic would charge and even tell you where you can buy the cheapest parts to do it on your own.

Just google it, i only know a german one!

Good luck ! ^_^
