I haven't played OSRS since 07 -,- and im just wondering what skills should i focus first for making money ive just been mining rune essence at the moment which is probably one of the longest ways to make money.

Woodcutting can be good, but may be hard because of the bots (how ironic )

I would suggest hunter maybe, if you like it. After a level it can be good money. 

If you start the game from nothing, it's suggested to raise your magic level for the teleports (just an idea from me)

Combat was always a good way to money. Connected to slayer I think it can be good fun, xp and money making too.

 

Ps.: Do not focus on that you just want to make money. Try many, different ways for making money, not only do the 'best method' (if it exists) because it can get easily boring. I would suggest this, because this way you don't only make money, but have fun too.

When it comes to it, GWD is the best money in the game. So if you are interested in that at all, maybe look into getting a high combat! I have a buddy that bots daily, he's the wealthiest person i know on there at just under a billion coin (07). Other than that Sorc Garden used to be great money for the time, check that out. Skill's like Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing, Runecrafting and so on are always profitable. You just have to find which skill you can grind and bot. You want a place with a low ban rate. Also I suggest training combat through Slayer as it can be very profitable! Plus play the game, it's not just about money, it's about having fun and enjoying yourself. Pointless grinding out a skill that you don't enjoy.

 

Quests are also a good option at low levels as they give you exp.
