My client gets stuck on "connecting to update server" and just stays there. 

Please help, i recently got v.1.8.2 and i've been having problems, it was fine before.

Try clearing everything out and re-downloading the client.

Also, if you have version 8 of java (the latest version) you'll need to downgrade.
