Well i'm reading Java for Dummies, it's very informative and has taught me more then anything else i've read so far.

Online interactive tutorials are one of the best ways I've learned different programming languages.

 

You can start off with PHP since it is really similar to JAVA. Or you can do JAVA. The reason I offer PHP first is because the online interactive tutorials for it are a lot more in depth.
