Looking to upgrade from my shitty iMac (i5)

Featured Replies

So im finally getting sick and tired of my iMac. its of course runs MAC OSX so im limited in the types of games that i want to play.

Battlefield, COD, basically all games on Steam.

Im looking to spend about $1500 (or thats what my budget will be for now at least) and i truthfully have no idea what i should be looking to get. I know a bit about computers but absolutely nothing about building my own (in terms of the parts i should be getting).

So im wondering if you wonderful people out there had any suggestions or insights for me.

Ideally i want a dual monitor set up, not sure what cooling is better (liquid or fan based, or both) but id like it to run fairly quiet as my computer area is in my bedroom close to my bed.

I can run wired ethernet to the computer so a wifi card isnt necessary although it never hurts to have one incase i move in the future.

I have the razer naga mouse and the anansi keyboard so thats taken care of.

Thanks

Brozu

Check out this thread I made. I built this computer and it was about $1400 with really nice specs, I got some deals on some of the parts because my friends already had them but it's a sick computer dual monitor too.

I'll take a look at it.

A few questions for you though,

Do you have the computer yet?

If so, how do you like its performance?

Thanks again,

Brozu

Thanks!

Build your own, they are cheap as fk

My issue with that is im not sure what parts fit together perfectly etc for the best performance.

I might make a thread explaining what parts are good for what lol.

What type of performance do you want from your PC? How intensively will you use the pc?

I'll most likely be running many bots when not gaming.

While i game id like to be playing things on max graphics or near max graphics, games like wow, league of legends, battlefield, cod's and many others.

I'll probably use it pretty intesively, I did with my current one until one of my fans crapped out on me.

A guide would be great!

liquid cooling is better than fan cooling, however it's just more expensive. it's quiet too.  I'd suggest not putting any lights in your computer to make it "cool" my computer has see through glass on the sides and mad lights inside, and temp gages on the outside, and I ended up shutting it all off because it became annoying. Any graphics card you get nowadays will automatically allow you to run dual monitors.. so that's not a problem. I personally can run up to three monitors and i have an older card. If you know nothing about computers it's good to pick the brains of people who work near computers so go to  the closest store that sells computer parts near you (micro center for me)  and go to the computer area and tell them what you're looking for. They will give you a basic idea, then go shopping for the parts yourself from newegg tigerdirect amazon and so forth.

Also i'd totally go with an SSD drive, and then get like a 500gb or w/e for storage. have it be drive D and Drive C your SSD.  if you've never used an SSD you're in for a suprise. under 30 second boot up. under 10 second turn off.  and like 5 seconds from sleep not even.

i5 4670k, corsair h80i/h100i depends what case you get but both are amazing - if you want air cooling which is cheaper, quieter but not as good get the dark rock pro 2 - it's a huge fan + heatsink cpu cooler (so you'd need low profile ram [small in other words]) but it looks sexy as fuck and is very quiet - if you want an even quieter air cooler get the noctua d14's (they look ugly though) which is slightly better than the dark rock pro 2, seasonic/corsair (seasonic is better) modular 600w power supply (make sure it's compatible with 4th generation haswel cpu's), h87 motherboard - find one then run it by me and I'll tell you if it's good, fractal design r4 case (I'm in love with it, I recommend it to everyone - amazing case + amazing price). Get 8gb of 1600mhz ram (2x4gb sticks) - most ram is good personally I buy corsair vengeance but their usually a bit overpriced but idm cause of the looks, either a gtx 770 or 780 - the 770 is really powerful and amazing price/cost ratio and the 780 is just sheer performance, samsung 840 pro series ssd 128gb/256 gb whatever size you'd rather, Western digital blue series 1/2tb hard drive for storing your shit on = price range from $900-$1400 rough estimate depending what you pick. + you'd need an operating system but you can pick that i'm sure

Sorry that post is a bit messy but I cba ordering it out. If I do make a thread about parts I'll make it in 2 days since I'll be busy today and tomorrow - I'll make it nice and neat too.

This is all great information!

i'm going to spend the next week or so, mixing and matching some parts online and seeing what i can come up with. I'll most likely make another post when i do that!

Thanks for all the insight!

Okie, gl with your picking if you want any help lemme know.

When I read 32gb ram I cried and closed your thread.

No offence but, that's not a very good build, you bought a lot of unnecessary stuff like a gtx 680 is the same performance maybe even better than a 770 but about 100 dollars less also if you wanted to max out with an i7 you should have gone with the new Haswell architecture chips, ram speed is subpar at most in my opinion, the speakers aren't good enough to for you to hear the full effect of your soundcard and lastly your power supply is too big you should have gone with 600-650watts and gotten 80+ gold instead of bronze

and to the people in the thread saying water cooling is better than air cooling, that's not true at all you can buy nice fans that are really quiet and better than water, if you do go with water though I wouldn't recommend anything over an H60, even then the stock fan should be just fine as long as you're not overclocking anything
