Socks5 proxy vs VPN

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm new to the internet anonimity stuff, what is better to secure yourself. A paid VPN service such as IPvanish? Or setting up a Socks5 proxy. I have no clue right now how that works, and I'll do my research on it. Is there like any site out there which teaches you all the ways to secure yourself like from simple securing to advanced? I've seen that IPvanish gives you a Socks5 proxy with it, so my best bet is to use that?

VPN traffic is (typically) encrypted. If you're purchasing from a reputable VPN provider, they encrypt traffic. However, SOCKS traffic is not encrypted, i.e. your home ISP can still snoop on what you're doing.

Is there more than a VPN for security?

I know tor, not really for botting ofcourse. Just wanted to know in how far you could secure yourself. Guess a VPN is enough.

A VPN is enough for your average Joe who likes a little tentacle porn, but if you seek true anonymity it's obviously more complex than that and will require a combination of different measures to add multiple layers of security. Also keep in mind that when purchasing a service, you are trusting that provider with your identity, so choose wisely especially if you intend to perform black-hat activities (which I am not condoning).

I assume there are no real tutorials for extra security on the surface web?

I honestly don't know. I picked up the little practical stuff I know from different places along the years. You'll find good tutorials explaining the whitehat aspects fairly easily. With some digging I'm sure you'll find the spicy stuff too :boge:

Not into the nasty side of deepweb, just wondering how far you could go in anonimity. I know it's impossible to really be invincible from watching mr.robot atleast haha
