im trying to use a proxy for my browser and when i go to a website it just downloads a page and doesn't load shit? i thought its meant to come up with a dialogue box asking for the login details?

Most people use Maxthon browser to use their SOCKS proxies with, as it has good proxy support.
You just go into the settings, and enter your proxy information.

The link above is to version 4 of Maxthon. The latest version,  5, no longer supports Java.
